Sabrina Hölzer  

Sabrina Hölzer studied, with distinction, Musicology, Philosophy, Pedagogy, and Germanistics at the Albert Magnus University of Cologne. Following periods as Assistant Director and Producer at various German opera houses, she took up the position of Guest Lecturer at the „Universiität der Künste“ (Berlin Academy of Arts).  During this period, she undertook productions at home and abroad, including “Jakob Lenz “at the Opéra National de Lyon, in cooperation with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and the Hebbel Theatre Berlin, a project initiated by Claudio Abbado.

Through her work, Sabrina Hölzer has since then molded the artistic language of the Zeitgenössische Oper Berlin (Contemporary Opera Berlin). She has conceived and directed numerous productions of experimental projects such as Mauricio Kagel’s “Tribun“ in the Berlin Reichstag“ and Adriana Hölszky’s “Tragödia, der leere Raum“. For this production, the Zeitgenössische Oper Berlin was awarded the Debut Prize of the „Akademie Musiktheater Heute“ (Academy of Contemporary Opera). There followed “Gespenstersonate“ by Aribert Reiman with Martha Mödl in the leading role which was given the highest praise by Klassik Heute (Classic Today).  Sabrina Hölzer continued her teaching career as guest professsor for music- drama instruction at the Salzburg Mozarteum and as a guest lecturer at the “Cursos De Verano 2007“ of the spanish University UNED. Under her direction, the inter-cultural Chinese-German opera project “Temptation“ by the Chinese composer Qu Xiao-song was given its first performance at the Munich Biennale 2004. That same year, she directed a new production of Hans Zender’s “Don Quijote“ at the Komische Oper Berlin (Comic Opera Berlin).  Her production of „“Seraphin, Versuch eines Theaters“ by Wolfgang Rihm in coproduction with the Berliner Festspiele resulted in an invitation to the 2005 Biennale in Venice.

In addition to her work for the Zeitgenössische Oper Berlin, there followed in 2006 „GRAMMA – Gãrten der Schrift (Gardens of Writing) by the Spanish composer José Sánchez-Verdú at the Munich Biennale, which, in cooperation with the German Opera Berlin, was to be seen 2007 in Berlin. For the MaerzMusik-Festival for current music 2008 she created the piece „TON. Scena for mobiles, audience and instrumentalists“ with the australien composer Liza LIm and the Berlin based artist Volker März. Tohether with Lothar Zagrosek she created „Die Vögel. Eine konzertante Operninstallation“ („The birds. A concertante opera installation) based on the opera by Walter Braunfels, Konzerthaus Berlin.

Under her stage direction the Zeitgenössische Oper Berlin has received several awards.

Sabrina Hölzer lives and works in Berlin.
