The novel "The Idiot" by F. M. Dostoievski was the model for a ballet pantomime of the choreographer Tatiana Gsovski, for which Henze wrote the music. After the first performance Ingeborg Bachmann, at Henze’s request, wrote a new, lyrical text. The resulting work is not an opera, not a ballet, not a drama.

Henze himself: "This work is the attempt to bring music, poetry, dance and drama together in a new fashion."
