Zeitgenössische Oper Berlin

A center for contemporary opera and music

The Zeitgenössische Oper Berlin (Contemporary Opera Berlin) and the architects firm Gewers Kühn & Kühn are presenting the plans for a new building designed as a performance center and research laboratory for contemporary opera and music. The proposed site for the building is at the bend of the river Spree near the historic site of the famous former Kroll Opera, between the Hamburger Bahnhof Museum and the office of the Federal Chancellor.

The building was conceived in the succession of the visionary concepts for theater houses of the last century and the new ideas and requirements of composers, musicians and performing artists which emerged during the last fifty years. For the first time in history, the main hall will satisfy both visually and acoustically the requirements of contemporary artists regarding its multifunctional use. Research laboratories provide the link to science and the economy. A media library, an experimental stage, rooms for sound installations, an exhibition of electronic music, a music playground and a restaurant invite the public to visit and experience not only the evening performances. We don’t know what the music of tomorrow will sound like: This building is created as a free place for inspiration.
